Medical Ear Piercing Commonly Asked Questions:
Lyndon Pediatrics is excited to offer this service! The service is only available to established patients of the practice. We have selected the Blomdahl Medical Ear-Piercing System. This system is only available to medical providers.
What are the advantages of having your child’s ears pierced at Lyndon Pediatrics?
The Blomdahl medical ear-piercing system provides a safer procedure for piercing your child’s ears. The system uses a disposable cartridge that is replaced with every piercing and uses medical-grade plastic or surgical titanium to reduce the chance of an allergic reaction. This system also eliminates the possibility of patient-to-patient cross-contamination because only the single-use part of the equipment ever comes in contact with the skin at the piercing site. You will have access to Natasha Wilcox, FNP-BC who is trained in medical technique and wound management. We offer pre-procedure topical anesthesia, which is not available in non-medical settings. With this topical anesthetic, your child may experience a pinch or stinging sensation, similar to a vaccine injection, during the procedure.
Can I get an ear piercing done at my child’s well, sick visit, or as a walk-in?
Ear piercing will only be performed by appointment and not as an “add-on” to another sick or well visit. The designated time is required for the numbing cream to take effect, Natasha Wilcox FNP-BC to explain the procedure, perform the procedure, and answer questions about the aftercare.
Where do we pierce?
We only pierce ear lobes.
How much will it cost?
1 ear: $75 or 2 ears: $125
Your payment covers the cost of numbing the ears before the procedure and piercing the ear(s) with a single pair of hypoallergenic medical-grade plastic or surgical titanium crystal earrings. The earrings avoid nickel and are free of other allergens and harsh substances such as lead and cadmium.
Fees for ear piercing will not be filed to your insurance policy as this is a cosmetic procedure. All payments for this service must be paid by cash/check only and are due at the time of service.
What type of earrings are used?
The earrings are in a sterile cartridge attached to the piercing device. They are made of a Swarovski crystal stud with a medical-grade plastic or surgical titanium base and post. Medical plastic or surgical titanium is encouraged with the initial piercing to reduce the risk of developing a nickel allergy from the metal post. Blomdahl’s patented medical plastic ear piercing stud is the ONLY 0% nickel ear piercing stud in the world! There is no better way to help patients avoid developing nickel allergy during the ear-piercing process.
How old must my child be to have his/her ears pierced?
At this time, Natasha Wilcox, FNP-BC, will offer ear piercings for children 5 years or older. The child must be up to date with their vaccines.
What are the risks?
Ear piercing is a minor surgical procedure similar to stitches. Despite precautions using a sterile technique, there is still a small but rare chance of infection, scarring, or allergic reaction. We will ask you to sign an informed consent waiver at the time of the procedure detailing these risks.
How do I care for the piercing afterward?
We recommend NOT replacing the original ear-piercing studs for at least 6 weeks. After piercing, you must clean the earlobes with soap and water or benzalkonium chloride solution twice daily. Always use clean hands to touch ears and earrings. There is no need to rotate the Blomdahl medical grade studs to prevent them from adhering to the skin. You will be provided with an aftercare instruction handout for more detailed information. You will also be provided with benzalkonium chloride solution wipes for aftercare.
